After-School Education and Safety Program (ASES)

As an educator in an after-school program, you are an invaluable resource to many children and their families...

You provide a safe place for students to do homework, engage them in structured physical activities, and foster students′ curiosity and academic development through the enrichment activities you facilitate.

Working with young people, while extremely rewarding, can also be very challenging at times. Getting any number of students to remain respectful and responsible and focused on their assignments can sometimes seem impossible. It is common to become overwhelmed with the needs of so many students in your charge.

In order to mitigate some of these challenges, it is imperative to keep students active and engaged with material that is meaningful and interesting to them. Here are a few ways to help ensure the development of an environment conducive to learning:

  • Ensure that all students understand the value or importance of their assignments
  • Provide students the opportunity to choose activities of high-interest when their assignments have been completed
  • Teach students to resolve conflict in a peaceful, non-violent manner
